Newly appointed Chief Information Officer Mike Laytham threw down the challenge to his team to join him in The Push-Up Challenge – Australia's largest mental health and fitness event.
In the 23 days from 4-26 June, each participant was challenged to complete 3,214 push-ups, representing the number of lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2023. Participants could also opt to do half the push-up target.
"I've been doing The Push-Up Challenge for four years now, and this year we set it up with the ECU team we've called 'Beat the Boss'," Mike said.
We managed to get 24 of the team to be involved, and I'm astounded that we have already raised $4,500 towards mental health services.
Despite the sore arms, abs and legs, ECU's 'Beat the Boss' team completed a total of 55,800 push-ups.
"Taking part in the Push-Up Challenge has been more than just a fitness goal for our team - it's sparked real conversations, heartfelt check-ins and a stronger sense of care for one another," Mike said. "It's been inspiring to see colleagues reach out, share and support each other around mental health."
And if you happen to see a cult superhero character around campus, your eyes aren't deceiving you.
"As an aside, I set the challenge to the team that if we hit $3,000 they could decide what my forfeit would be," Mike said.
We have well and truly surpassed that total, so as it turns out, I have to wear my Deadpool outfit to work for a full day that they get to choose.
Two other staff members also participated in other teams in the challenge and raised $1,600, bringing the total raised by Digital Services staff to more than $6,000.
If you would like to contribute to this important cause, donations are still being taken.
