Edith Cowan University (ECU) is delighted to announce that a current student and staff member of the ECU community have received awards in the King's Birthday Honours for their exceptional contributions to Australian society.

The King's Birthday Honours celebrate the outstanding achievements of those who have made a significant impact in their neighbourhoods and the wider Australian community. This year's list recognises 948 exceptional Australians.

ECU Staff member Bradley Brian Woods AM has been honoured with a Member of the Order of Australia award for significant service to the tourism and hospitality industry, and to the community of Western Australia.

Mr Woods is Adjunct Associate Professor at ECU's School of Business and Law.

Mr Woods has been Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Hotels Association, Western Australia Branch, since 1998, and the Tasmanian Branch from 1994-1997. He received the National Distinguished Leadership Award of the Australian Hotels Association in 2013.

Mr Woods said he was deeply grateful for the recognition.

"I am sincerely honoured to have been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

"Hospitality and tourism are industries built on people, and this recognition reflects the collective efforts of the many individuals, businesses and organisations I have had the privilege to work with throughout my career. It also acknowledges the dedication of teams, boards, members, industry partners, colleagues, educators and community organisations who are committed to a strong, sustainable and successful tourism and hospitality sector," he said.

"I have been fortunate to work alongside extraordinary people through the Australian Hotels Association and across the broader tourism, hospitality, education and community sectors, and I am sincerely grateful to all who have supported me along the way."

Mr Woods' award is a fitting recognition of his long career of leadership and dedication to hospitality and tourism in Western Australia.

The next generation

PhD student and ECU alumnus Brett Travis Cole has received a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to youth, and to the community.

Mr Cole is a PhD student in ECU's School of Medical and Health Sciences.

He has been a member of Scouts Victoria since 2008. His first leadership role was as Assistant Cub Scout Leader. He received the Governor General Meritorious Public Service Award for Excellence in Scouting in 2016, and in 2023 the Silver Wattle award, which recognises outstanding service by an adult member in an active leadership role over a period of 10 to12 years.

Mr Cole has also contributed long-term service to the Occupational Health & Safety, Biosafety and Biosecurity Industry through professional work and volunteering with industry associations and bodies.

"The Medal of Order of Australia means a lot to me. All volunteers generally give their time and energy to a cause because they believe heavily in its values, are passionate and want to give back to the community. This is what I volunteer for.

"To be recognised with such a prestigious award is very humbling and overwhelming and means the world to me. There are so many amazing people that have supported me along the way and this award is for them as well," he said.

Mr Cole's award is a testament to his leadership and commitment to Australia's youth over decades.

"I think it is a great honour to serve the community in all aspects and organisations and whilst volunteers do not do it for recognition or award, it is an amazing opportunity to pay respect and celebrate the hard work, dedication, and commitment of worthy individuals."

The WA Governor His Excellency the Honourable Christopher John Dawson AC APM said that the work of the award recipients, and the contributions of the thousands of Australians who have been nominated and recognised throughout the history of our honours system, is something we can take great pride in celebrating.

Thirty-two more members of the wider ECU community were also recognised in the King's Birthday Honours list. For full details please see the official list.
