ECU expands city presence through DevelopmentWA partnership

Edith Cowan University's new agreement with DevWA opens a public platform for teaching, performance and student work.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) has entered into a 12-month Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with DevelopmentWA (DevWA), enabling staff and students to activate spaces at Yagan Square throughout 2026.

The agreement provides access to high-profile public space in the Perth CBD, supporting ECU's growing presence in the city and creating new opportunities for teaching, performance and community engagement.

The partnership comes as ECU's City Campus is now fully open and reflects a broader push to connect students and staff with real-world environments beyond the classroom.

An expansion to ECU City

Under the MoU, ECU Schools and Service Centres will be able to use a range of spaces within the Yagan Square precinct.

This includes the amphitheatre for performances, showcases and rehearsals, as well as open areas for informal activations and pop-up events. Opportunities are also available to display student work on Yagan Square's Digital Tower and to deliver teaching activities such as filming, broadcasting and live projects.

The arrangement allows for both planned programming and spontaneous use of the space, giving Schools flexibility in how they engage with the precinct.

There is also scope for joint programming, with DevWA able to partner with ECU on events and initiatives, alongside opportunities to bring activity back onto campus.

Learning beyond the classroom

The agreement creates new opportunities for students to connect and engage with public audiences.

The MoU brings teaching to the heart of the city, showcases student work to a wider community, and expands opportunities for applied, cross-disciplinary learning.

From creative performances to business, technology and community-focused projects, the spaces are intended to reflect the diversity of ECU City.

The initiative also supports cross-disciplinary collaboration, encouraging Schools to work together and with external partners.

Coordinated approach

A streamlined process is being developed by Creative Futures to allow Schools to submit proposals for performances, teaching activities and digital content. This will ensure alignment with precinct requirements and support coordination with DevWA.

The approach is intended to keep access simple while maintaining consistency across programming.
