Health treatments evolve at breakneck speed and rely on research to drive the newest therapies and medical breakthroughs.
Good health research depends on the community being involved, but it can sometimes be hard for people to know where to start.
Edith Cowan University (ECU) is launching a new register to make it easier for people from across the globe to be involved in ongoing and future medical research.
The ECU Health Centre Research Register allows anyone to sign up and receive information about research projects that match their areas of interest, such as mental health, maternity care or diabetes.
There are more than 20 health areas to choose from, with participants able to select multiple preferences.
Some of the current research projects seeking participants include studies on how being physically active improves mental health, and better communication in aged care facilities.
Project coordinator Danielle Brown said the register would benefit researchers, but also provides a way for people to be involved in research relating to potential treatments relevant to themselves or loved ones.
"Health research is critical to finding out the causes and solutions to Australia's health and wellbeing challenges," she said.
"This research often needs community involvement, such as recruiting clients, patients, carers and visitors to participate in research studies.
"The register aims to make it easier, faster and simpler for our clients, patients, and community members to contribute to research which is relevant to them, and for researchers to connect with the right people."
