The West Australian Showcase of Docs by the Sea 2025, is a prestigious and unique pitching forum for international filmmakers to showcase their work-in-development to mentors, colleagues, and funders across the Asian film industry.

The initiative was created by Docs by the Sea (DBTS), an international program based in Indonesia, in association with Screenwest, WA's leading not-for-profit that supports the development and production of film and media. DBTS' goal is to create a global network for Asian filmmakers.

ECU Associate Professor and multiple Walkley Award winner, Kylie Boltin, was selected alongside three other exciting documentary projects to present her feature, Five Incarnations, at the inaugural showcase.

"Overall, it was an excellent insight into Asian and international markets, a brilliant place to connect with local WA filmmakers and funders as well as international filmmakers and decision makers."

"It was fantastic to hone my pitching skills with a global market in-mind, considering how Australian stories can translate to global audiences, and inspiring to talk to industry veterans about creative decisions and storytelling," Associate Professor Boltin said.

Five Incarnations is a deeply personal story about reinvention and deals with colonial themes that run across multiple generations and continents. It delves into the topic of love of oneself, others, and the issue of representation as a migrant.

Associate Professor Boltin, said to Screenwest, "It feels like a great fit, given my family connections to India and the fact that one of the themes of the film is the intergenerational impact of the White Australia Policy."

The project was very well received and has attracted interest from multiple stakeholders in the global film industry.

In addition, Associate Professor Boltin's feature documentary, has been invited to pitch at The FACTory held by the Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC), a prestigious film festival with global reach, in March 2026.

"Thank you to ECU and Screenwest for supporting my research and attendance at Docs by the Sea as part of the WA Showcase 2025. I look forward to sharing this knowledge in detail with ECU postgraduate screen students, " Associate Professor Boltin said.
