Edith Cowan University (ECU) welcomes the announcement that the Lagoon Medical Centre Yanchep at the ECU Health Centre in Yanchep has been selected as the location for a new Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in Western Australia.

The clinic will be operated by FGMC Pty Ltd, the team behind Lagoon Medical Centre Yanchep, whose expression of interest to run the service was proudly supported by ECU.

The Australian Government in August announced the establishment of six new urgent care clinics in WA to alleviate pressure from local emergency departments, and to fill an important gap in urgent services across extended hours and weekends.

Ms Tracey Roberts MP, Member for Pearce, was a leading advocate for bringing one of WA's six new Urgent Care Clinics to Yanchep.

"A Medicare Urgent Care Clinic in Yanchep is very important for local families. Taking pressure off the Joondalup Hospital emergency department for urgent care needs like burns, cuts, or broken bones. No out-of-pocket costs. Just quality healthcare, seven days a week, close to home," Ms Roberts said.

ECU's Executive Dean for the School of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor Moira Sim, said the new urgent care facility will strengthen access to timely, community-based care for residents in Yanchep and surrounding urban and regional areas.

"ECU is proud to support the establishment of this Medicare Urgent Care Clinic at our Yanchep Health Centre, which will deliver real and immediate benefits to the local community," Professor Sim said.

"This partnership creates an important opportunity to expand access to high-quality care close to home, while also enhancing the health services available to a rapidly growing region. We're pleased to play a role in supporting FGMC's vision and helping ensure the Yanchep community receives the timely care it deserves."

Dr Charles Meribole, Medical Director for Lagoon Medical Centre Yanchep, expressed his excitement about the announcement.

"We are committed to servicing Yanchep and its surrounding suburbs with affordable and accessible urgent care services, every day of the year. Urgent Care is for non-life-threatening emergencies and helps relieve pressure from the emergency departments. It will be a great asset to the Yanchep community," Dr Meribole said.

Medicare Urgent Care Clinics operate extended hours on weeknights and weekends. The Yanchep Medicare Urgent Care Clinic will begin operating over the coming months.
