Edith Cowan University (ECU) is partnering with the FGMC Pty Ltd (FGMC) to establish the Lagoon Medical Centre Yanchep, expanding on the existing allied health services already being offered at the nearby ECU Health Centre Yanchep.

From 8 September this year, two new general practitioners (GPs) will be based at the fully bulk-billed practice, providing the Yanchep community with convenient access to quality medical care close to home.

The opening of Lagoon Medical Centre, Yanchep marks a significant step in improving local healthcare services, ensuring residents no longer need to travel long distances for essential medical support. With a focus on accessible, patient-centred care, the new practice aims to meet the growing healthcare needs of the region while supporting the wellbeing of the wider community.

"This partnership with FGMC highlights ECU's ongoing commitment to working with healthcare providers to improve community health outcomes," ECU's Executive Dean for the School of Medical and Health Sciences, Professor Moira Sim said.

"By facilitating the establishment of the Lagoon Medical Centre, we are not only supporting the delivery of essential, local general practice services but also helping to build a healthier, more resilient community. It's an excellent example of how collaboration between universities and healthcare providers can create lasting benefits for the public."

Minister for Health and Ageing, Minister for Disability and the NDIS, Mark Butler said the Australian Government is delivering better access to health care services in Western Australia, so people can get the care they need closer to home.

"The Lagoon Medical Centre Yanchep will give local families in this fast-growing region timely health care and peace of mind.

"It's just one of the many ways the government is strengthening health care in WA, including delivering cheaper medicines, more Medicare Urgent Care Clinics and more mental health clinics."

FGMC GP principal Dr Mohamed Abou El-Alamein said the Lagoon Medical Centre would embrace family values and aims to provide the community with the best possible healthcare.

"Our doctors, nurses and admin staff are committed to providing our patients with the utmost compassion and care at every opportunity. Our objective is to deliver high quality healthcare services to our patients so they can remain healthy and happy.

"Being a bulk billing medical centre will ensure that everyone has the chance to access healthcare in an easily accessible and affordable way," Dr El-Alamein said.

The GP services at the Lagoon Medical Centre will complement the existing allied health services provided at ECU Health Centre Yanchep, which include Child and Adolescent Health Services, Ability WA, and two ECU-run programs: the Psychological Services Centre and Community Counselling.

From August this year, these services will be further enhanced with the introduction of a dedicated child health and vaccination clinic, strengthening the centre's role as a comprehensive hub for community healthcare. In 2026, an additional 1,700 m2 building will be added and additional health services will be provided.

Professor Moira Sim said the expansion of services reflected ECU's deep commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of people in Yanchep and surrounding areas.

"Having GP services co-located with our allied health and community programs means local families can access a truly integrated model of care close to home."

Professor Sim highlighted the particular importance of the new child health and vaccination clinic.

"We know that access to early health intervention and preventive services is vital for giving children the best start in life. By bringing these services into one accessible location, we're helping children and families get the care they need."

The ECU Health Centre Yanchep is jointly funded by the Australian Government, the Western Australian State Government, and Edith Cowan University.
