Edith Cowan University (ECU) has been ranked the top university in Western Australia for Research Quality in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027.
The University is now ranked within the top 100 universities globally for Research Quality, sitting at 93rd, and is ranked equal 8th in Australia, alongside the University of Sydney.
Research Quality evaluates the influence a university's research has globally, rather than simply how much research it produces. It considers how often a university's research is cited by other researchers, how its citation impact compares with research in the same field globally, the number of publications that rank among the world's top 10 per cent for citation impact, and whether its research is being cited by other highly influential papers.
By taking these measures together, the ranking provides an indication of how widely a university's research is being recognised, used and built upon by the global research community.
"This result is a strong endorsement of the quality and global impact of the research being undertaken across ECU," ECU Vice Chancellor Professor Clare Pollock said.
"Being ranked among the world's top 100 universities for Research Quality reflects the expertise, ambition and dedication of our researchers, and the growing influence of their work in addressing challenges that matter to communities here in Western Australia and around the world.
"Research excellence is about more than producing knowledge, it is about creating knowledge that is recognised, valued and used to make a difference. This result demonstrates the impact ECU research is having on the world stage."
ECU was ranked 351-375 overall in the THE world University Rankings 2027, compared with the ranking of 351-400 in the THE World University Rankings 2026, with ranking bands having been adjusted.
ECU showed an improved performance across the majority of the rankings, including Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality and International Outlook.
Nearly 3,150 universities were assessed globally for the THE World University Rankings 2027, and around 2,300 received a rank.
The 2027 rankings used 2024 student and staff data, 2021–2025 research data, and data from reputation surveys held in 2025 and 2026.
"This result recognises the international influence of ECU's research. Beyond the rankings, our researchers are tackling real problems affecting communities locally and globally, from improving health and wellbeing and advancing Indigenous education to strengthening cyber security and defence," Professor Pollock added.
"I am proud of our University and the brave and ambitious direction we are headed. Watch this space."
