Australia's leading nursing research academic journal Collegian has appointed Edith Cowan University's Professor Lisa Whitehead as its new Editor-in-Chief.

Collegian is the official peer-reviewed journal of the Australian College of Nursing (ACN).

Professor Whitehead is Associate Dean of Research at ECU's School of Nursing and Midwifery and brings 30 years of experience in nursing research to the role.

Her work has focused on improving health outcomes for people living with chronic conditions, self-management interventions and working with families to support the management of chronic conditions.

The new appointment adds to her extensive list of honours, which includes being chair of the ACN’s policy chapter on chronic disease, being named a 2021 ACN Fellow, and sitting on the International Family Nursing Association’s Practice and Nominating Committees.

Professor Whitehead said she is honoured to be Collegian’s new Editor-in-Chief.

"Collegian plays a vital role in shaping health and advancing nursing and I am looking forward to building on the excellent work my predecessor Professor Lisa McKenna has already taken," she said.

"Taking up the role of Editor-in-Chief is a key career achievement and I am looking forward to working with everybody to continue taking the journal forward."

ACN chief executive Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward said Professor Whitehead was an outstanding choice to oversee the publication.

"Professor Whitehead is one of Australia's foremost and leading nurse researchers, with her work in the top 2 per cent of researchers in the nursing, rehabilitation, public health and health services sub-disciplines worldwide," she said.

"I'm thrilled she will be leading the Journal and our talented publishing team."
