ECU Vice-Chancellor retirement announced

Professor Steve Chapman CBE will be retiring from his position as Edith Cowan University's Vice-Chancellor on 31 July 2024.

ECU's building one in sunlight ECU’s early and mid-career research symposium is an opportunity to share ideas with colleagues in a supportive and generative way.

Professor Steve Chapman CBE will be retiring from his position as Edith Cowan University's Vice-Chancellor on 31 July 2024.

ECU Chancellor, Denise Goldsworthy AO said "After almost a decade of transformational leadership, Professor Chapman has decided to retire. Steve is a visionary leader and a driving force behind the growth and success of our university locally, nationally, and internationally."

"Under his leadership ECU has gone from strength to strength, with the most significant development during his tenure being our City Campus development."

Professor Chapman commenced his role as Vice-Chancellor and President of Edith Cowan University in April 2015. Prior to joining ECU, Professor Chapman was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University from 2009 and Vice-Principal at the University of Edinburgh from 2006.

"Steve has led ECU with a focus on, and a dedication to our students, their experience, and their success. His unwavering commitment to our staff, academic excellence in teaching and research, innovation, and community engagement, has left an indelible mark, shaping ECU into the institution it is today."

Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Chapman said, "Being the Vice-Chancellor of ECU has been an absolute privilege and the highlight of my career as a university leader."

"ECU has come so far in the last eight years, but these are our successes – none of the many achievements would have been possible without our exceptionally talented leadership team, or the determination and dedication of ECU's staff. I also thank the Council for their unceasing support, commitment to our values and focus on ECU’s transformational purpose".

Denise Goldsworthy AO, Chancellor at ECU continued, "Steve will be leaving ECU in an enviable and unique position, a university with an optimistic, inclusive, and collegial culture, that is financially secure, clear in its strategy and direction, and one of the most successful universities in Australia."

She concluded, "While there is still some time before Steve leaves ECU, the Council will begin a global search for his successor.  We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition as we continue our journey of growth and advancement."
