Edith Cowan University's (ECU's) top science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates could benefit from a world-leading training program in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science thanks to a new partnership between the Western Australia Government and UK technology company Faculty.

Minister for Defence Industries, Hon Paul Papalia CSC MLA, launched the Faculty Fellowship at ECU City.

The Fellowship will bring together an inaugural cohort of 25 Fellows from Western Australia's four public universities, providing them with intensive training in cutting-edge technologies before undertaking placements across government and industry.

The program is designed to equip the next generation of STEM professionals with the advanced skills increasingly sought by employers, while strengthening Western Australia's capability and competitiveness in priority sectors such as defence, mining and critical technologies.

"This initiative is about investing in WA people and our future, creating new opportunities across key industries and ensuring our economy remains strong, resilient, and competitive," Minister Papalia said.

"By working in partnership with industry, we are unlocking the full potential of innovation and positioning Western Australia to capture the benefits of major national priorities, including AUKUS."

The Faulty Fellowship is expected to run over a period of three years in Western Australia, with the program open to Undergraduates, Masters and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral researchers. The program will be open to students nationally and internationally; however, 12 positions will require at least one degree from a Western Australian university.

The positions will be paid, and applications are expected to open in August. The program is due to start in January 2027.
