ECU's Nutrition and Health Innovation Research Institute has helped the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale become the first local council in WA to implement an action plan to protect and promote healthy food in the area.
The three-year Local Food Action Plan was developed in partnership with ECU, the Shire, Western Australian Local Government Association, East Metropolitan Health Service and SJ Food and Farm Alliance.
It aims to create environments that support residents to make healthy food choices and enhance their path to healthier living.
These positive initiatives include building a resilient food system, ensuring easy access to nutritious and sustainable food, and celebrating a vibrant food culture.
Project lead Ana Gowrea said the plan could be the first of many.
"Shining a light on local producers will help raise their profile, while also engaging with and supporting agricultural businesses," she said.
The plan also outlines the importance of local schools offering healthy food programs – and how schools can go about implementing them.
"It's been such a pleasure working with the Shire to create this comprehensive plan," Ms Gowrea said.
"The Shire continues to inspire other local governments with practical ways to connect residents with healthy local food."
Shire President Michelle Rich said local residents would reap the health benefits of the plan.
"This is an exciting step forward on our path to growing a healthier community, together," she said.
