The ECU Racing Team wins Formula Student UK - for the second time!
The victory cements ECU Racing's place among the world's elite student engineering teams and adds another chapter to the program's remarkable success story.
Designed, engineered and built entirely by ECU students, Gwen impressed judges across the competition's rigorous engineering, manufacturing, business and on-track performance categories over five days of action to claim the overall championship.
Five days of high-speed competition
Engineering and Design Director Tarun Srinivas said the win was the culmination of two years of hard work and innovation.
"Gwen was developed over two years and represents countless hours of design, testing and problem-solving," Mr Srinivas said.
"To come away as overall champions twice in a row against some of the world's best universities is something we're enormously proud of."
An Australian-first hybrid, Gwen combines an electric powertrain driving the front wheels with a combustion engine powering the rear wheels, giving the team a unique competitive advantage.
"Gwen’s success highlights the world-class capabilities of ECU students," Executive Dean Engineering, Associate Professor Douglas Chai said.
"Formula Student is one of the most challenging engineering competitions in the world and winning it requires excellence across every aspect of the project. Our students have shown they can compete with, and outperform, the best international teams."
ECU Racing working in the pit
Student engineer and driver Cian Butler said seeing Gwen take the top prize was a moment the team would never forget.
"We always believed Gwen had the potential to be something special," Mr Butler said.
"Gwen's lightweight, agile and incredibly capable, but what really makes this win meaningful is the effort put in by every student behind the scenes. Standing at Silverstone as overall champions was an amazing reward for the whole team."
Since 2008, ECU Racing has represented Western Australia on the international stage through Formula Student UK and Formula SAE competitions, with many graduates going on to careers in Formula 1 and Supercars.
The Formula Student UK 2026 championship win further strengthens ECU Racing's reputation as one of the world's leading university motorsport teams.
