Edith Cowan University (ECU) and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) have celebrated a month of exceptional performances and student achievements at three awards ceremonies, proudly supported by generous donors who are helping shape the future of the performing arts.

The ceremonies, held throughout August, highlighted the extraordinary talent of WAAPA students while acknowledging the lasting impact of donor contributions. Professor David Shirley, Executive Dean of WAAPA, said the events captured the power of philanthropy to inspire and enable excellence.

"Our annual series or prizes, awards and scholarships are a celebration not only of our students' extraordinary talent but also of the generosity and vision of our donors," Professor Shirley said.

"These awards provide life-changing opportunities for our students, enabling them to pursue their passions and build their futures as performing artists. We are deeply grateful to our donors for their commitment to supporting emerging talent and enriching the cultural life of our community."

The Taryn Fiebig Awards, established by the Humanity Foundation to honour the memory of one of Australia's most acclaimed sopranos, celebrated performers who combine voice and drama to create transformative performances. This year's winners were Jessie O'Connor from Music Theatre and Eve-Scarlett Trower from Classical Voice, selected by a distinguished judging panel.

WAAPA supporter Peter Hurford further expanded his commitment in 2025, doubling the number of $10,000 prizes offered through the Peter Hurford Award for Excellence. Six outstanding students across performance, design and composition were recognised for their commitment, creativity and artistry, including Harrison Lorenz-Daniel, Ryan Tierney, Georgina Anderson, Miranda Weinert, Darcy Lewis and Joshua Noronha.

Professor Shirley said the support of donors such as Alan and Delys Newman, the Humanity Foundation, and Peter Hurford reflects the vital role of philanthropy in sustaining the arts.

"Every gift, whether large or small, helps WAAPA to create an environment where students can take creative risks, explore their artistry and achieve excellence," he said.

"By celebrating our generous supporters, we hope to inspire others to join us in fostering the future of the performing arts."
