Why studying Biomed Science could lead you anywhere

Wondering what to study at uni and haven't decided on a future career or job? There are courses where you can do some exploring in your first year, with flexibility around subject choices in second year. One of these is Biomedical Science.

Students working together in a university laboratory. ECU Biomedical Science students working in one of the Joondalup Campus Superlabs.

Of course, we're assuming you're more interested in science than another discipline. Or maybe you just have a general interest in the sciences.

We're also assuming you can see yourself in a lab coat (ECU branded of course). Because this is a course where you'll spend a fair amount of time in a laboratory.

Luckily, we're talking state-of-the-art swanky new Superlabs at Joondalup Campus.

We can't speak highly enough of the facilities here. Best in WA, maybe even in Australia. And developing your practical skills in this incredible environment will set you up for your future career – whatever that becomes.

Are you thinking medical?

As you've already spotted, this course has 'medical' in the title. But it's not about becoming a doctor or a nurse (although there is an option to study Medicine after you graduate).

Biomed is not about working with patients or clients, like you would as a Speech Pathologist or an Occupational Therapist.

It's more of an investigative thing. Like understanding how the body functions and finding a cure for a disease.

You could also be solving business problems using maths and biology. Or even become a crime scene investigator.

If this is sounding like you, keep on reading.

Be what you want to be

This is a study area you can start in with no clear idea what you want to be. And it can lead to a career you never dreamed of.

A Biomed degree will help you build a solid foundation for specialising in any career path within medical science.

So as we said at the start, in your first year of Biomedical Science at ECU you'll be introduced to all kinds of subjects and possible future directions.

In your first semester you'll cover topics as diverse as Human Genetics, Cultural Studies, and Anatomy and Physiology.

In second year, you'll start to choose one or two major subjects. Majors are what you study the most units of for your degree.

In Biomed you can choose from Medical Science, Forensic Science, Human Biology, Human Genetics, Nutrition Bioscience, Applied Chemistry and Data Science.

We should also mention that our staff are highly qualified and when they're not sharing their brilliance in your lectures or lab sessions, they're active in their respective fields.

Some of them have been trained and taught at universities you may have heard of, like Harvard and Oxford.

That doesn't mean they're unapproachable demi-gods. Quite the opposite! All our staff are here to help you find your feet, whatever that takes.

Where to from here?

Biomedical science is a continually changing, dynamic field with long-term career prospects. That includes roles in management positions, research, education and specialised laboratory work.

However, if you graduate with a Biomedical Science degree it doesn't have to stop there. You can do postgraduate study and go off in another direction altogether!
