The redesigned multi-level library creates a seamless student experience that brings library, learning support and career services together in one space.
Supporting students to ask for help
Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Chapman CBE said a Learning and Career Hub is placed centrally in the new layout, encouraging students to seek help and support.
"Our focus is on making accessible, attractive, and welcoming spaces for the diverse needs of students – including our online students, many of whom do use our campus facilities," Professor Chapman said.
"This redesigned space also represents an opportunity to try new ways of supporting and connecting with students, as we look forward to opening our City Campus in 2025."
Student-centred design
ECU knows that today's students need functional, student-centred spaces to study and engage with their peers.
The informal and transitional spaces in the new-look ECU Library reflect some of the leading thinking in student-led support services.
A student concierge model offers students the opportunity to be guided by peers, as well as experts.
There is also a designated space to welcome industry on campus for workshops and engage with students to support their transition to employment.
Noongar culture key to design
The Library also reflects ECU's deep commitment to Noongar culture through the thoughtful design of its informal learning spaces.
"Kaarla Mia, meaning home fire in Noongar, is at the heart of this new student space. It is designed as a welcoming meeting place for all ECU students," Professor Chapman said.
"The lighting in Kaarla Mia also represents the night sky and the ability to always find our way on whatever journey we may be on."
ECU's Elder-in-Residence, Dr Roma Yibiyung Winmar, praised the design which brings the unique beauty of Western Australia's natural environment inside.
"Our hope is that the design not only celebrates and draws from our Aboriginal culture, but also provides a welcoming space for students from all walks of life to learn," Dr Winmar said.
Kaarla Mia has been rated one of the students' favourite spots on campus.
Meeting students' needs
Master of Medical and Health Science by Research student and Peer Mentor Leader, Miss Constance Yih-Lih Green, said the new ECU Library has made the space more welcoming and helps students find the right support.
"It is nice to have someone direct us where to receive the help we need, and it's created a great place for peer mentors and mentees to meet," Miss Green said.
"The new ECU Library provides students with a calm, spacious environment to study and really helps when we're working on assessments.
"I love how the design brings the outdoors inside, and the brightness and sound acoustics are just the right level for me to focus and do study sessions with friends.
"With the student services being more noticeable, it shows that ECU really cares and is always available to provide support."
