Description

Leadership, strategy, and change represent three of a managers most important areas of competence. This unit first acquaints students with contemporary theories and then unpacks a toolkit of practical skills for professional development across these three topics. Important aspects of the modern international business environment, such as culture, diversity, and the pace of change, are discussed to develop a global perspective. The skills that students learn in this unit will be useful both inside and outside of the workplace, at all stages of their career.

Students must pass FBL5010

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Appraise the major approaches to the challenges of organisational change and identify their preferences, competences and future learning needs regarding change.
  2. Appraise their present leadership skills and future learning needs.
  3. Produce basic strategic analysis and identify their capabilities and future skill-development needs.
  4. Review major theories of leadership, describing their advantages, limitations and personal relevance.
  5. Review the role of leadership in organisational management, strategy and change and discuss their approach to self-leadership in developing future skills.

  1. Contemporary leadership theories.
  2. Developing practical leadership skills.
  3. Key elements and approaches to strategy.
  4. Tools for developing and implementing strategy.
  5. Organisational change models.
  6. Effective change management skills.
  7. Leading yourself for professional development.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

On-campus students will attend a weekly class. The focus is on building an understanding of relevant concepts from the literature and connecting it to students workplace experience. The aim is to develop a personal view of ones current capabilities and future learning needs.

The seminar PowerPoint slides will be made available on Blackboard, as well as audio recordings of the lectures, and copies of in-class materials.

Online students access the program via Blackboard and are expected to work through the slides, listen to the audio lectures, and engage regularly on the online Discussion Board.
