Domestic student

Here are the most common ways to demonstrate your English competency to enter an ECU course.

International student

Our minimum English competency requirements can change, depending on the course you're interested in, and whether it's an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Meet the minimum score for STAT Written English or successfully completed ATAR English, ATAR Literature, ATAR EALD or equivalent.

  • ATAR students require a minimum of 'C' grade in ATAR English, English Literature or English ALD
  • Non-ATAR students applying with a Certificate IV via the Experienced Based Entry Scheme pathway require an 'A' in General English and Experienced Based Entry Scheme documents.
  • Non-ATAR students with ATAR English, English Literature or English ALD require a minimum 'C' grade.

If you've successfully completed units at an Australian, Canadian, American or UK university provider, you may meet English competency standards. Submit your academic transcript for assessment.

Undergraduate English requirements

Test method Minimum requirement

Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry.
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic 52, with no scores less than 50. (Results are typically valid for only two years.)
University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced] (CAE) or Cambridge C1 Advanced An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169. (Results are typically valid for only 2 years.)
Edexcel (Pearson) International GCSE (IGCSE)

English Language 8 (A*), English Language 6 (B*) or English Literature at a grade 4 (C) or above.

English as a Second Language (ESL) at a grade 6 (B) or above

United Kingdom (UK) GCE O Level, GCSE, or GCE A level Grade C/Grade 4 or better, or GCE A Level - Grade E in English Language, English Literature or English Language and Literature.
Cambridge International GCSE (CIE IGCSE) English as a First Language (Syllabus 0500) at a grade C or above.

English as a First Language (Syllabus 0522) at a grade C or above.

English as a Second Language (Syllabus 0510) at a grade B or above, with grade 2 in Speaking (oral) and Listening (Aural).

English as a Second Language (Syllabus 0511) at a grade B or above, or IGCSE/GCE O Level English Language (Syllabus 1123) at a grade C or above.
Other Other evidence of English language proficiency may be acceptable. Please apply for an assessment or contact your local ECU authorised agent.

Postgraduate English requirements

Course specific English requirements

Some courses have specific English requirements. Check below to see if this applies to your course.

  • International students must attain an IELTS Academic with an average level of 7.5 or more, across the four components of listening, speaking, reading and writing; no score below level 7.0 in any of these components; and a score of 8.0 or more in the components of speaking and listening.  Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement.

    Applicants who have completed secondary education, bachelor degree or master degree studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA are not required to provide an IELTS Academic test.  Minimum English standard requirements may be satisfied with one of the following:

    • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
    • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;*
    • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;
    • University Preparation Course;
    • Indigenous University Orientation Course;*
    • Aboriginal Student Intake Test;*
    • AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree; or
    • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent).

    Note:
    Applicants who have completed their secondary education in South Africa in English, or have an undergraduate degree taught in English from a South African University are deemed to have satisfied English language requirements.

    Applicants from the Seychelles:
    Successful completion of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) grade C or above, PLUS a completed 4 year National Diploma.

  • International students must attain an IELTS Academic with an average level of 7.5 or more, across the four components of listening, speaking, reading and writing; no score below level 7.0 in any of these components; and a score of 8.0 or more in the components of speaking and listening.  Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement.

    Applicants from the Seychelles:
    Successful completion of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) grade C or above, PLUS a completed 4 year National Diploma.

  • International students and internationally schooled applicants (other than those students schooled in a recognised country) are required to provide an English language test approved by ECU with a score equivalent to the following minimum requirements:

    • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.5 (with no individual band score less than 7.0), or
    • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic with a minimum overall score of 72 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 102 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:
      • 24 for listening
      • 24 for reading,
      • 27 for writing, and
      • 23 for speaking

    Note: 
    English tests must be completed within 2 years of the proposed course commencement date and additional requirements may apply in relation to acceptable number of test sittings.
    Recognised countries for English language purposes are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or the United States of America.  The medium of instruction must be English.

    Minimum English standard requirements for this course may also be satisfied with one of the following:

    • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
    • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;*
    • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;
    • University Preparation Course;
    • Indigenous University Orientation Course;*
    • Aboriginal Student Intake Test;*
    • AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree; or
    • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent).
  • In addition to satisfying ECU minimum English standard requirements for this course, all applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency as specified in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language skills registration standard. (https://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx)

    These requirements are as follows:

    • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), including IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR), or
    • Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:
      • 24 for listening,
      • 24 for reading,
      • 27 for writing, and
      • 23 for speaking, or
    • Completion of at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country as defined by the NMBA (including at least 2 years between years 7 and 12) with a supporting written declaration to confirm that your primary language is English, or
    • Completion of at least 5 years full-time equivalent continuous combined secondary and/or tertiary and/or vocational education taught and assessed in a recognised country as defined by the NMBA, with a supporting written declaration to confirm whether your primary language is English.  Note: The 5 years does not include the proposed ECU study. 

    Note:  English tests must be completed within 2 years of the proposed course commencement date and additional requirements may apply in relation to acceptable number of test sittings and combined scores across test sittings.

    ECU's minimum English standard requirements for this course may be satisfied with one of the following:

    • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;

    • Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:
      • 24 for listening

      • 23 for speaking, or
    • Completion of at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country as defined by AHPRA (including at least 2 years between years 7 and 12), or
    • Completion of at least 5 years full-time equivalent continuous combined secondary and/or tertiary and/or vocational education taught and assessed in a recognised country as defined by the AHPRA (within the last 7 years). Note: The 5 years does not include the proposed ECU study.

    Note:  English tests must be completed within 2 years of the proposed course commencement date and additional requirements may apply in relation to acceptable number of test sittings and combined scores across test sittings.

    Minimum English standard requirements for this course may also be satisfied with one of the following:

    • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
    • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;*
    • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;

  • Students seeking registration with the Paramedicine Board of Australia will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency as specified in their English language skills registration standard (https://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx).  These requirements are separate to ECU course admission English language requirements which are detailed below.

    International students are required to provide an IELTS Academic with an overall minimum score of 7.0 (no individual band less than 7.0).  Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement.  Acceptable tests are as follows:

    • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:
      • 24 for listening
      • 24 for reading,
      • 27 for writing, and
      • 23 for speaking, or
    • Any other accepted test or qualification from a recognised country as defined by the Paramedicine Board of Australia.

    Note:  English tests must be completed within 2 years of the proposed course commencement date and additional requirements may apply in relation to acceptable number of test sittings and combined scores across test sittings.

    Minimum English standard requirements for this course may also be satisfied with one of the following:

    • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;

  • In accordance with the requirements of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), international applicants for this accredited course are required to provide an IELTS Academic with an overall minimum score of 7.0 (no individual band less than 7.0).  Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement.  Alternative acceptable tests are as follows:

    • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
    • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:

  • English Language Requirements for Nursing and Midwifery:
    International students (other than those students schooled in a recognised country as defined by APHRA at http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx) are required to provide any English language test approved by AHPRA with a score equivalent to an IELTS Academic overall minimum score of 7.0 (no individual band less than 7.0). Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement or we may require additional information to confirm that requirements have been satisfied.

  • English Language Requirements for Nursing and Midwifery:
    International students (other than those students schooled in a recognised country as defined by APHRA at http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx) are required to provide any English language test approved by AHPRA with a score equivalent to an IELTS Academic overall minimum score of 7.0 (no individual band less than 7.0). Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement or we may require additional information to confirm that requirements have been satisfied.

  • English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking);
    • Occupational English Test (OET) with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking);
    • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking);
    • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test:
      • 24 for listening
      • 24 for reading,
      • 27 for writing, and
      • 23 for speaking;
    • Bachelor degree from an approved country;
    • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at postgraduate level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent); or
    • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

    Note:  English tests must be completed within 2 years of the proposed course commencement date and additional requirements may apply in relation to acceptable number of test sittings.

  • English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • IELTS Academic with a minimum overall score of 7.0 and a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking);
