English competency

English competency must be demonstrated to enter any of our courses. Here are the most common ways of demonstrating English competency.

ECU Course type Minimum requirement
University Preparation course Minimum C grade in General English or the equivalent
Undergraduate course Meet the minimum score for STAT Written English or successfully completed ATAR English, ATAR Literature, ATAR EALD or equivalent.

If you've successfully completed units at an Australian, Canadian, American or UK university provider, you may meet English competency standards. Submit your academic transcript for assessment.
Postgraduate course If you've successfully completed units at an Australian, Canadian, American or UK university provider, you may meet English competency standards. Submit your academic transcript for assessment.

Our minimum English competency requirements can change, depending on the course you're interested in and whether it's an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Undergraduate English requirements

Test method Minimum requirement
Academic IELTS An overall band score of 6.0, with no individual band less than 6.0
TOEFL Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better
TOEFL iBT Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17
GCE O Levels Grade C or better
WAUFP 50% plus pass in ELACS
International Baccalaureate Diploma Minimum grade 3 at higher level for an English subject, or minimum grade of 4 at standard level for an English subject
Pearson Test of English (PTE) PTE Academic 57, with no scores less than 50 for courses with a current requirement of Academic IELTS 6.0

PTE Academic 64, with no scores less than 58 for courses with a current requirement of Academic IELTS 6.5
University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced] Pre-2015: A score between 52 - 57 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test.

Post-2015: An overall score of 169, with no individual band less than 169.
Other Other evidence of English language proficiency may be acceptable. Please apply for an assessment or contact your local authorised agent.

Postgraduate English requirements

Test method Minimum requirement
Academic IELTS An overall band score of 6.5, with no individual band less than 6.0
TOEFL Minimum score of 573, including Test of Written English of 5.0 or better
TOEFL iBT Minimum score of 84, with no individual score less than 17
Pearson Test of English (PTE) PTE Academic 64, with no score less than 58 for postgraduate standard entry courses
University of Cambridge [Cambridge English: Advanced] Pre-2015: A score between 58 - 66 with no less than 'Borderline' in any element of the test

Post-2015: An overall score of 176, with no individual band less than 169
Other Other evidence of English language proficiency may be acceptable. Please apply for an assessment or contact your local authorised agent.

Course specific English requirements

Some courses have specific English requirements. Check below to see if this applies to your course.

Students must attain an Academic IELTS with an average level of 7.5 or more, across the four components of listening, speaking, reading and writing; no score below level 7.0 in any of these components; and, a score of 8.0 or more in the components of speaking and listening.

Note:
If secondary education and degree studies were completed within a period of 2 years before applying for registration in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA, applicants do not need to provide proof of English competency. 

Applicants who have completed their secondary education in South Africa in English and have an undergraduate degree taught in English from a South African University are deemed to have met English language requirements.

Applicants from the Seychelles:

Successful completion of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) grade C or above, PLUS a completed 4 year National Diploma.

Students must attain an Academic IELTS with an average level of 7.5 or more, across the four components of listening, speaking, reading and writing; no score below level 7.0 in any of these components; and, a score of 8.0 or more in the components of speaking and listening.

Note:
If secondary education and degree studies were completed within a period of 2 years before applying for registration in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA, applicants do not need to provide proof of English competency. 

Applicants who have completed their secondary education in South Africa in English and have an undergraduate degree taught in English from a South African University are deemed to have met English language requirements.

Applicants from the Seychelles:

International students (other than those students schooled in a recognised country as defined by APHRA at http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registration-Standards/English-language-skills.aspx) are required to provide any English language test approved by AHPRA with a score equivalent to an Academic IELTS overall minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.5). Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement.

Students must attain an Academic IELTS with an overall band minimum score of 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.5).
