English Proficiency Bands

The English Proficiency Bands outline the minimum English language requirements that an applicant must meet in order to gain admission into a course. Each course is assigned an English Language Band appropriate to that course with all acceptable English Language Programs, English Language Tests and English Entry Pathways shown in each band. You can satisfy ECU's minimum English standard requirements through one of these means.

    • Year 10 English completion in Australia or equivalent
    • ACER - Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test at the required level as determined by ECU
    • A score between 65% and 84% in the Aboriginal Student Intake Test (ASIT)
    • ATAR Courses (WA) - Year 12 ATAR English grade C or better or year 12 ATAR English with a final scaled score of at least 50 (includes English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect)
    • Australian Centre for Languages (ACL) - Diploma in English for Academic Purposes
    • Curtin University of Technology - English Language Bridge Certificate of Completion
    • Educational Disadvantage - Director, Student Administration may admit a student by giving consideration to the applicant's standard of written and oral English in the context of the course to which they have applied
    • General Courses (WA) - Year 12 General English grade C or better (includes English, Literature or English as an Additional Language/Dialect)
    • International Baccalaureate - Higher level English grade 3 (2011) or grade 4 (2012 onwards) or a Standard Level (SL) grade of 4. Can be achieved through IB Certificate or IB Diploma. Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry
    • International Institute of Business and Technology (IIBT) - Certificate IV in Academic English or Academic English IV with a minimum score of B2+ with no band less than B2+
    • Interstate school leaver requirements are as per the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre (TISC) agreements
    • Murdoch Institute of Technology (formerly Murdoch Language Institute) English for Academic Purposes (AEP) - Score of 60-65% or greater
    • Navitas Academic English Level 3 (AE3) - Overall pass mark of 60%
    • Occupational English Test (OET) - A minimum score of B or 350 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking)
    • Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0). (Results are valid for two years only)
    • Pearson English Test (PTE) Academic - 52 with no scores less than 50. (Results are valid for two years only)
    • Perth International College of English (PICE) - Completion of PICE level 7
    • Phoenix Certificate IV in English for Academic Purposes or Phoenix Academic English program - Overall CEFR B2+ with no band less than B2+
    • Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) - A mark of 125 or greater in the STAT Written English component for tests completed prior to Feb 2010 and a mark of 110 or greater in the STAT Written English component for tests completed from Feb 2010
    • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent)
    • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada
    • Successfully completed AQF Diploma or AQF Advanced Diploma (ECU will consider an incomplete Advanced Diploma where at least one year of full-time study has been completed)
    • TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17. (Results are valid for two years only)
    • Universal English College - Academic English (AE5) with a Credit or Academic English (AE4) with a grade of A
    • UNSW Institute of Languages - Combined Universities Language Test (CULT) at 65% or better
    • Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Course - A final school level of 4 or greater in English course studies in year 12 (WA English 2007), or a final scaled mark of at least 50 or a final school letter grade of A, B, or C in one English unit studied in year 12 at Stage 2 or above, or a final school letter grade of A in 1C and 1D English units studied in year 12 (includes English, Literature and English as an Additional Language/Dialect)
    • Western Australian Tertiary Entrance Examination (TEE) Subjects - A final scaled mark of at least 50 or a final school letter grade of A, B, C, or D studied in year 12 (includes TEE English, TEE English Literature and TEE English as a Second Language)
    • Western Australian Universities' Foundation Program (WAUFP) - English Language and Australian Cultural Studies (ELACS) score of 50 or greater
    • Western Australian Wholly School Assessed Senior English - A final school letter grade of A, B or C studied in year 12
    • ACER - Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test at the required level as determined by ECU
    • A score of at least 85% in the Aboriginal Student Intake Test (ASIT)

    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169. (Results are valid for two years only)
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - An overall minimum score of 169 with no individual band less than 169. (Results are valid for two years only)
    • Cambridge International GCSE (CIE IGCSE) - English as a First Language (Syllabus 0500) at a grade C or above, with grade 2 in Speaking and Listening, or English as a First Language (Syllabus 0522) at a grade C or above, or English as a Second Language (Syllabus 0510) at a grade B or above, with grade 2 in Speaking (oral) and Listening (Aural), or English as a Second Language (Syllabus 0511) at a grade B or above, or IGCSE/GCE O Level English Language (Syllabus 1123) at a grade C or above
    • Curtin University of Technology - English Language Bridge Certificate of Completion
    • Edexcel (Pearson) International GCSE (IGCSE) - English Language A*, English Language B* or English Literature at a grade C or above, or English as a Second Language (ESL) at a grade B or above
    • Edith Cowan College (ECC) - Postgraduate Qualifying Program (PQP) - Meets upon completion
    • Edith Cowan College (ECC) - Successful completion of level 4 of the Academic English program at ECC with a minimum attendance of 80%
    • Educational Disadvantage - Director, Student Administration may admit a student by giving consideration to the applicant's standard of written and oral English in the context of the course to which they have applied
    • English for IELTS and Academic Purposes (EIAP) Preparation - Upper Intermediate Level with a grade A in all five core components
    • General Courses (WA) - Year 12 General English grade A will be considered for applicants seeking entry via ECU's experience based entry pathway only (includes English, Literature and English as an Additional Language/Dialect)
    • Hawthorn English (Melbourne) Intensive Academic Preparation - Completion of the Intensive Academic Preparation with a minimum grade of C
    • IELTS Academic - Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0). (Results are valid for two years only)
    • International Baccalaureate - Higher level English grade 3 (2011) or grade 4 (2012 onwards) or a Standard Level (SL) grade of 4. Can be achieved through IB Certificate or IB Diploma. Note: IB Certificate does not satisfy ECU's minimum academic entry requirements for undergraduate entry
    • International Institute of Business and Technology (IIBT) - Certificate IV in Academic English or Academic English IV with a minimum score of B2+ with no band less than B2+

    • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent)
    • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ, Canada or South Africa where the medium of instruction is English
    • Successfully completed AQF Associate Degree
    • Successfully completed AQF Diploma or AQF Advanced Diploma
    • Successfully completed ECU Indigenous University Orientation Course
    • Successfully completed ECU University Preparation (Education Assistant) course, or successful completion of unit UPU0002 at 50% or better
    • TOEFL iBT - Minimum score of 70, with no individual score less than 17. (Results are valid for two years only)
    • TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) - Minimum score of 550, including Test of Written English of 5 or better. (Results are valid for two years only)
    • Universal English College - Academic English (AE5) with a Credit or Academic English (AE4) with a grade of A
    • UNSW Institute of Languages - Combined Universities Language Test (CULT) at 65% or better

    • GPA of minimum 6 in English at A (high level) or a GPA of minimum 9 in English at B (intermediate level) when graduating from Upper Secondary School: Studentereksamen (STX); Bevis for Højere Forberedelseseksamen (HF); Bevis for Højere Handelseksamen (HHX); or Bevis for Højere Teknisk Eksamen (HTX)

    • Completed Bachelor degree from the University of the West Indies
