Description

This unit involves a study of the major styles and theories of leadership with an emphasis on diagnosing the leadership potential of individuals and suggesting ways to increase leader effectiveness in sport and recreation settings. It will use practical activities to demonstrate leadership in group dynamics, the importance of communications and introduce concepts such as leadership attributes for the organisational change process. It also examines recreation programming concepts, the process of programme planning, design, budgeting, promotion and evaluation. Students are also provided with the opportunity of gaining experiential knowledge of recreation programming during a short-term industry practical placement and the development of career and employee resources.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse and apply the major characteristics involved in leadership.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of programme planning and leadership skills appropriate to community sport and recreation settings.
  3. Develop practical assets to enhance employment opportunities in the recreation sector.
  4. Examine and critically evaluate the theories and styles of leadership.
  5. Identify and apply the basic terminology, concepts, principles and processes of recreation programming.

  1. Communication skills, decision making strategies and guidelines of sport and recreation leadership.
  2. Observation and analysis of behaviour in sport and recreation groups.
  3. Prepare for work experience in sport and recreation settings.
  4. Programming for special events.
  5. Sport and recreation centre activity leadership and programming experiences.
  6. Theories, nature and styles of leadership.
  7. Theories, principles and concepts of sport and recreation programme development.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The mode of delivery for this unit is through weekly three hour on-campus seminars, practical sessions, guest speakers and a short-term industry practical placement in a programming setting. The teaching and learning approach in this unit is enhanced through practical leadership activity facilitations by students. Group facilitation and the generation of ideas and skills are developed via individual presentations of leadership activities where communication skills, team work and problem solving abilities are emphasised. This unit also provides a work integrated learning component whereby students are required to undertake a short term practicum placement within a sport or recreation program for an industry agency or organisation. Employability skills are developed with the submission of assessment items including an individual resume based on the practicum placement. The succesful completion of this unit requires students to complete assessment items which are assessed for quality academic and professional standard, including written communication, verbal communication, critical analysis and the ability to research effectively.
