Unit Set Information

Environmental Health Major

This major is designed to develop skills in the quantification and assessment of environmental health risks and public health safety.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

This major is studied online, however laboratory-based units require on-campus attendance.

Practicum Requirement

Students undertake a professional placement unit which comprises of a 140 hour placement in an environmental health department.

Duty of care

Students will be required to sign contracts and ensure duty of care and insurance issues are covered.

Attendance requirements

Students will be required to complete 140 hours of practical placement in an environmental health department.

Implications of failing

HST2116 is a required unit for the major. If the unit is failed, students will be unable to complete the major.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply creative and innovative solutions in communities that may be experiencing environmental or public health risks.
2. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the biological mechanisms of human disease.
3. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge and skills in the assessment of environmental health risks and public health safety.
4. Demonstrate international and cultural awareness and understanding of individual and collective human rights at both a national and global level.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of sustainable practices to apply appropriate environmental management strategies to control diseases in communities.
6. Exercise critical thinking and judgment to identify and solve problems that may arise within communities that will potentially affect the environmental and local population's health.
7. Explain the importance of cultural diversity and sensitivity (including Indigenous cultural awareness) when collaborating with communities.
8. Reflect and set goals related to professional development and continued learning.
9. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge relating to environmental health risks and public health safety.
10. Use and analyse environmental health data to make decisions about and solve problems related to the planning and implementation of appropriate environmental health interventions.
11. Use professional communication skills and work collaboratively to enable the exchange of information with colleagues, practitioners, clients, policy-makers, interest groups and the public.
12. Utilise relevant levels of technology, information and English language skills to identify, access and compile relevant and appropriate information in different environmental health contexts.

Students can apply for membership with Environmental Health Australia. Graduates are eligible for membership with Environmental Health Australia.
