Student safety and security

At ECU we want all of our students, including anyone who has moved here from another country or another state, to feel safe. That means free from harassment, discrimination or sexual assault.

This page contains important information about your safety on campus and how to report incidents.

If you've recently arrived in Perth to study, these guides also contain tips and information about how to stay safe in our community and on our fabulous beaches.

Remember to keep your emergency contact details updated

Log into SIMO and look under Personal Details to find the Emergency Contacts section. This information will only be used in emergency situations, such as an accident, and will be treated with the strictest privacy.

Your emergency contact details will only be accessible to approved senior staff in Student Life who are authorised to act on behalf of the university in critical incidents.

Your safety on campus

To assist and protect our students, visitors and staff, our Security staff are available on-campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If for any reason you're concerned for your personal safety while on campus, please contact a Security Officer on (+61 8) 6304 3333, use the security telephones located around campus, or use NowForce, our new Security app.

The app works wherever you have a data connection. It allows our security people to respond if you’re on campus, or alert Police on your behalf if you're off-campus.

In an emergency, you should always call 000 to alert police and/or ambulance services.

Building access card not working?

If you're unable to access a building due to a faulty access card, you can contact ECU Security via a campus security telephone to request access to the building. When the Security Officer arrives, they'll ask to see your access card and student ID card.

Note

You must be enrolled as an ECU student to use your building access card.

What does
that mean?
Here's a quick guide to some of the things we mention during the Orientation stage.
  • SIMO is short for 'Student Information Management Online'. It sounds better too!

    SIMO is the system you’ll access through the Student Portal to:

    • enrol and re-enrol;
    • obtain your class timetable;
    • see your exam times and dates;
    • view your results; and
    • view your Statement of Account.
  • To get an ECU student ID card, you need to visit one of our eLab counters at each campus. Your photo will be taken and your card produced while you wait. eLabs are here:

    • Joondalup eLab: Building 31.233 (in the library)
    • Mount Lawley eLab: Building 10.136
    • Bunbury eLab: Building 3.101E

    Your student ID card also acts as your:

    • photo identification as an ECU student
    • print credit card for printing and photocopying
    • Transperth SmartRider travel concession card (optional, for full-time students)
