ECU Alumni celebrated at the WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards

Now in its 19th year, the Awards celebrates nurses and midwives for their outstanding contributions to the WA health system, among the winners announced were five ECU Alumni.

The WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards (WANMEA) is the State’s premier event of the nursing and midwifery industry’s calendar.

Now in its 19th year, the Awards recognises more than 43,000 highly skilled nursing and midwifery professionals working across the State in public, private and non-government sectors.

The Awards celebrate nurses and midwives for their outstanding contributions to the public health system, with awards presented across 13 categories.

ECU is a proud Platinum sponsor of the Awards and this year marked our 13th year of partnership.

Among the winners announced at the 2023 WANMEA Gala Ball on Friday 6 October, were five ECU Alumni.

Sandra Vinciguerra was the winner for the prestigious Nurse of the Year award as well as the Excellence in Primary, Public and Community Care award.

Sandra’s outstanding work as part of the COVID-19 Vaccination Program at North Metropolitan Health Services contributed significantly to WA health system’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sandra graduated from ECU in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science (Nursing).

Jodie Atkinson was the winner of the Excellence in Education award. This award recognises a nurse/midwife who is an excellent role model and demonstrates a commitment to activities that contribute to a culture of life-long learning.

As a Midwife Educator and Graduate Program Coordinator at Kind Edward Memorial Hospital, Jodie empowers others through education.

Jodie completed a Bachelor of Nursing in 2009 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery in 2010 at ECU.

Anne Watts was the winner of the Excellence in Leadership Award.

Anne is the Nurse Unit Manager for the Spinal Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital State Rehabilitation Service being responsible for patient care coordination, ward management, and leadership of the nursing team. Anne is an outstanding nursing leader and has worked with spinal injury patients for over 30 years.

Anne graduated from ECU in 2001 with a Bachelor of Nursing.

WANMEA Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll

There were also two additions to the WANMEA Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll this year, both ECU Alumni.

Those inducted into the Lifetime Achievement Honour Roll are assessed based on a long standing and extraordinary contribution to the nursing and midwifery profession.

Leanne Monterosso is Chair of Nursing at St John of God Hospital and The University of Notre Dame.

Leanne completed a Nursing with Honours in 1994, a Doctor of Philosophy in 1999 and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching in 2004 at ECU.

Anne Bourke is the Executive Director of Perth Children’s Hospital Clinical Nurse Immunisation Services.

Anne completed a Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) in 1991, a Master of Nursing in 1997 and a Post Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management in 1999 at ECU.
