ECU welcomes Norwegian nursing students

Eleven international students from Norway are studying with ECU's School of Nursing and Midwifery this semester.

Nursing students at Joondalup campus Norwegian nursing students are finding their way around Joondalup campus with School of Nursing and Midwifery's Janet Jenkins and Dr Carol Crevacore.

From the ice-cold temperatures of winter in Norway to the summer heat of Perth – a cohort of Norwegian nursing students are settling in for a semester at Edith Cowan University.

Dr Carol Crevacore, Director of International for ECU's School of Nursing and Midwifery, said the 11 international students are entering their second year of their nursing degree.

"We have 11 future nurses here to experience Australian healthcare, education and way of life," Dr Crevacore said. "This is through an ECU partnership with the Lovisenberg Diaconal University College in Oslo, Norway."

Julia Berger, Regional Manager Europe from ECU's International Office, said this was the first time since 2019 that the partnership had been re-established.

"These students have the opportunity to study abroad and gain international experience, as well as adding value from an academic perspective," she said.

Ms Berger said there was already strong interest for 2027.

Nursing student Karoline Hermansen said she is already enjoying Perth's warm weather, friendly people and beautiful beaches, and is hoping to learn a lot in her semester at ECU Joondalup.

"I chose to study in Australia because it's exciting to experience what studying and everyday life is here compared to Norway, especially like a nursing student," Karoline said. "Since Australia is so far away, it feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience this.

"I'm excited to see how hospitals here operate compared to those in Norway, and what similarities and differences we will experience. I believe we will be able to bring a lot of valuable learning back home to Norway, which will be beneficial for us."

Fellow student Juliane Syse said she hopes to gain a deeper understanding of a different educational healthcare culture and make many new friends during her semester at ECU.

"I chose to take the opportunity to study in Australia to experience the amazing culture I have always heard so much about," Juliane said. "As a future nurse, I wanted to experience Australia's approach to health, illness and medicine - I am interested in how Australians interact with patients, their routines and regulations, their professional values, ethical perspectives, patient-centred care, and communication styles."

The students will take part in three units and a clinical placement.
