Remarkable achievements

Speaking at the event, Associate Dean (Strategic Partnerships and Work Integrated Learning) Dr Tania Beament said that the School and its students accomplished remarkable things in 2023.

"The School graduated 805 undergraduate Nursing students, 205 postgraduate students and 56 midwives," Dr Beament said.

"Some of whom we are proud to acknowledge, provided a safe home away from home for the residents of the Elderbloom Community Care Centre during the Wanneroo Bushfire Emergency.

"The School is also recognised as the only provider of a Graduate Diploma of Mental Health Nursing that is professionally accredited with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses in WA, making ECU one of four nationally – we have so much to be proud of."

Positive mentoring and leadership

ECU Nursing student Maxveen Kaur Sandhu was awarded the Nursing and Midwifery Citizenship Award. Sponsored by the Department of Health, the award recognises positive mentoring and leadership skills.

For Maxveen, the award serves as a meaningful validation of the hard work and dedication she invested in her endeavours.

"I am deeply gratified and honoured to receive the award," Maxveen said.

"I believe hard work and perseverance will always pay off in the long run. Throughout this course I have always strived to be a high achieving student despite my busy schedule as a mother of three children."

Maxveen aims to study a Masters in Midwifery and shared that her ECU experience so far has been enriching.

"Studying Nursing at ECU has offered a diverse and challenging academic environment. It has fostered personal and intellectual growth, offering opportunities for learning, collaboration, and the development of valuable skills," Maxveen said.

Keynote highlighted research priorities

ECU's School of Nursing and Midwifery Professor Claire Donnellan delivered the keynote on Sustainable Health Research Priorities emphasising the complexity and challenges in healthcare over the last three decades at this year's prize giving ceremony.

"If better health and wellbeing are to be within our reach, we may need to invest in leaner and more efficient approaches for conducting innovative and person-centric health-related research over the coming decades to advance evidence-based practice," Professor Donnellan said.

"ECU's nursing and midwifery graduates will be very well positioned and equipped to address these research priorities given the expertise they have acquired over the course of their training working across the interface between human behaviour, environment and society."
