Global inspiration

A unique cinematic experience, Fist of Fury Noongar Daa is an adaptation of the 1972 Bruce Lee kung fu classic, dubbed entirely in Noongar. It is the first feature film to ever be re-voiced in an Australian language.

When Lee's incredible power propelled him from Hong Kong cinema to global stardom in the early 1970s, Noongar mob here, just like audiences worldwide, took note, practiced moves and found inspiration in Lee's examples of discipline, loyalty and the eternal fight against injustice.

Fist of Fury is the epitome of all that. Set in Shanghai in 1910, it stars Lee as Chen Zhen, a loyal student out for vengeance against racist bullies.

Bruce Lee's lasting influence

Boomerang and Spear Director, Kylie Bracknell said that Lee perfected kung fu and mastered life.

"He was a moorditj (solid) philosopher who led by example. Why not link the most prominent non-white film star - much more than an actor - of the 1970s with Noongar language?

"He’s a legend, a credit to the human race, and our people respect his journey, his art and his legacy."

For Our Elders

This year's NAIDOC Week theme 'For Our Elders' reminds and encourages us to acknowledge the important role Elders have played and continue to play a prominent role in our communities.

Elders are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers, and loved ones.

They guide our generations and have been instrumental in the preservation of culture and language.

ECU is honoured to have Dr Roma Winmar, a key cast member in Fist of Fury Noongar Daa, as our Elder-In-Residence where she provides high-level advice and support for Aboriginal cultural activities across the University.
