ECU Africa Week 2025: Igniting innovation and partnerships across a rising continent

From 1 to 6 September 2025, Edith Cowan University (ECU) proudly hosted ECU Africa Week 2025, a dynamic program celebrating the University's growing influence and deepening partnerships across Africa.

ECU International team with African delegation ECU welcomed senior delegations from Kenya, Botswana and Mauritius.

Coinciding with Australia Africa Week, the initiative brought together government, industry and education leaders to build collaborations in research, education, clean energy and sport.

Throughout the week, ECU welcomed senior delegations from Kenya, Botswana and Mauritius to its Joondalup Campus. The visit culminated in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), reinforcing ECU's long-term commitment to creating partnerships that deliver real outcomes.

Vice-President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Jake Garman said the agreements reflect ECU's strong belief in genuine relationships.

"These MoUs are not just words on paper. They are promises of action, built on trust and shared purpose. We will nurture these partnerships, so they grow and create opportunities for students, families and communities both here in Australia and across Africa."

Highlights of ECU Africa Week included:

  • AAUN AGM and Forum: ECU hosted the Australia Africa Universities Network Day 1 workshops on its Joondalup Campus, positioning itself as a key partner in advancing research and academic collaboration.
  • Clean Energy Conference Australia Africa: ECU showcased its research expertise and hosted delegates, strengthening ties in renewable energy and sustainability.
  • Africa Down Under: ECU highlighted its MARS Centre and connected with leaders in mining, infrastructure and education.
  • Africa Gala Dinner: ECU joined diplomats, ministers and university leaders in celebrating cultural and institutional connections.

ECU's partnerships are already creating impact, from supporting more than 800 students from 11 African nations, to pioneering programs with the Botswana National Sports Commission and Kenya Medical Training College, to launching the ECU Africa Schools Network earlier this year.

Mr Garman said ECU's growing engagement with Africa is anchored in people and relationships.

"Africa is alive with creativity, ambition and energy. What makes our partnerships powerful is not just the projects we start, but the people we connect with. By working together, we are opening doors for students and academics, sharing knowledge, and creating futures that are brighter for everyone."
