Edith Cowan University (ECU) will offer a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from Semester one, 2024 for aspiring school teachers who have already completed a three-year undergraduate degree in another field.

Offering the ECU 'Grad Dips' will accelerate the number of teachers working in Western Australian classrooms.

"Our flagship, nationally accredited Master of Teaching Primary and Secondary courses have a nested Graduate Diploma of Teaching, which enables students to graduate after one year and teach in WA with provisional registration," ECU Executive Dean of Education Professor Caroline Mansfield said.

"During that time, students can choose to complete the Master of Teaching through online self-paced study."

"As the largest provider of graduates to public schools in WA, we are committed to supporting workforce needs as well as ensuring that future teachers experience quality initial teacher education, developing knowledge and skills to support success in the profession."

Why choose ECU?

  • The Graduate Diploma of Teaching provides 50-55 days of professional experience in schools including a 5-week block.
  • Students commencing in February will complete the course in one calendar year (by December).
  • Students can continue in the Master of Teaching program via self-paced online units, and then graduate with a higher degree. This will attract a greater salary.
  • Secondary pre-service teachers will complete units on essential core teaching skills including classroom management, effective learning and teaching, diversity and inclusion, assessment and reporting, as well as 2 specialist subject and 50 days of professional experience.
  • Primary pre-service teachers will complete units in primary curriculum including Mathematics, Science, the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as two units for teaching literacy. Primary pre-service teachers also study core skills including classroom management along with effective learning and teaching with 55 days of professional experience.

Teacher Education requires Creative Thinking

"ECU remains committed to delivering high-quality accredited training programs to aspiring Australian teachers," Professor Mansfield said.

"All of our Bachelor of Education and Master of Teaching courses are professionally accredited by the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia, and Early Childhood Studies courses have been approved by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority."
