Edith Cowan University (ECU) welcomed more than 180 primary and high school students, teachers, and parents for the Tournament of Minds (TOM) state finals, continuing a proud 15-year tradition as host of the regional and state events.

The TOM aims to nurture essential skills such as time management, innovation, and effective teamwork by challenging students to solve complex problems in a competitive setting. Participants work collaboratively to tackle open-ended challenges across four key disciplines, including The Arts, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, and Language and Literature, encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning.

This allows students the ability to implement their learning and gain real-world benefits that allow them to push the boundaries of their knowledge and develop core skills required for the future workforce.

The event was attended by ECU Executive Dean of the School of Science, Professor Marnie Campbell, and the Executive Dean of Education, Professor Caroline Mansfield.

"What you've done today is what real scientists, engineers, and innovators do every day," Professor Campbell said.

"It's about using knowledge to create a better, safer, and more sustainable world."

The rapid growth and increasing involvement of thousands of participants, both in Australia and internationally, shows that TOM has the ability to improve the well-being and critical skills of today's youth for tomorrow's needs.

"Tournament of Minds doesn't just test what students know; it challenges how they think. That's why ECU is so proud to support this program," Professor Campbell said.

Congratulations to the State winning teams, who will go on to compete at the TOM International Final in Sydney from the 29 October to 2 November.
