Edith Cowan University (ECU) research quality continues to shine on a global stage, with 63 of the University's researchers ranked in the top two per cent globally in the prestigious annual Stanford-Elsevier study.

ECU School of Science researcher Dr Iqbal H Sarker claimed 124th spot on the rankings, which placed him inside the top 0.002 per cent of researchers worldwide – the highest of any researcher from the University.

The annual study, conducted by Stanford University and published by Elsevier, analyses the research performance of more than 11 million scientists around the globe.

Based on a composite score that accounts for citation impact, co-authorship and career influence, the Stanford/Elsevier rankings provide an exhaustive measure of global research excellence.

ECU's total of 63 researchers ranked in the top two per cent for 2026 was an increase on last year's total of 59; the improvement reflects the University's continual improvement in research excellence and impact worldwide.

Dr Sarker was joined by School of Engineering Professor Stefan Iglauer (ranked 936th) inside the top 1,000 researchers globally.

School of Business and Law Professor Denise Jackson (3,945th) and School of Engineering Professor Laichang Zhang (5,457) rounded out the list of ECU researchers ranked within the top 0.05 per cent.

"Having 63 ECU researchers recognised among the top two per cent of scientists globally is a testament to the quality, expertise and impact of research taking place across our University," Vice-Chancellor Professor Clare Pollock said.

"This achievement reflects the strength of our research community and the contributions our researchers are making to knowledge and real-world challenges. It also builds on ECU's strong standing in Research Quality, recently recognised in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027, which ranked ECU first in Western Australia."
