How is ECU going further?

Go big.

Before she could walk, Rhiarn Coles had already overcome obstacles most people never face. Born at just 24 weeks and weighing 725 grams, she spent the earliest chapter of her life surrounded by hospital walls and medical care. But she didn't let this stop her. Instead, she let it inspire her. Now she's studying nursing at ECU, determined to support Aboriginal women and babies – particularly those born prematurely – transforming the care that once changed her life into care that will change many others. Going further isn't about where you start. It's about where you choose to take your story.
Beyond expectations.

For thousands of children, early learning centres are where lifelong eating habits are formed and healthy development begins. Yet many services don't have the guidance they need to prove the nutrition young children deserve. That's why ECU is leading the development of Australia's first best practice guide for nutrition in early childhood education. By going beyond the current expectations of nutrition services, Dr Ros Sambell and her team are giving more children the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
Go back to the drawing board.

Every designer knows the first draft is rarely the best one. The same can be true of life. Jerry Schweitzer had built a successful career creating video games, but something didn't feel complete. Rather than ignoring that feeling, he went back to the drawing board and asked himself a hard question: What has always mattered most to me?

He thought back to the experiences that had brought him the most joy in his lifetime. Jerry realised his fondest memories were from the time he spent on a boat with his family, exploring and connecting with nature. Now he's studying Conservation Biology at ECU. Because going further doesn't always mean sticking to the plan. Sometimes it means having the courage to redraw it entirely.
Go to your core.

For many people living with dementia, memories can become harder to reach. But deep within us are moments, melodies and stories that stay with us. The songs we grew up with. The languages we spoke. The experiences that shaped our lives.

ECU researchers, led by Dr Simone Marino, are using the power of music and storytelling to help older Italian migrants reconnect with those memories, creating personalised songs and life stories that celebrate their culture, identity and experiences. Because when you go to your core, you discover what has always been there.
Go where it scares you.
Where it's uncomfortable.

The biggest opportunities often begin when you're willing to step beyond the familiar and put yourself forward for something bigger. For ECU marketing students Kayah, Alissha, Samantha and Alex, that meant moving beyond the classroom and taking on a live challenge from Telethon 7 to help the charity connect with younger generations.

With no textbook answer to follow and no guaranteed outcome, they had to trust their ideas, challenge themselves and present their work to industry experts. And they left a great impression on the Telethon team. At ECU, we believe the best way to learn something is to live it.
Go way, way out there.

Sometimes to better understand what's happening on Earth, you have to take a giant step back. Through ECU's IGNIS Internship Program, 148 students from 26 schools are stepping beyond the classroom and into the world of space research, working alongside engineers, researchers and NASA scientists to help understand lightning, fire and the future of Earth observation. They're not just learning about space. They're contributing to a mission that could help predict bushfires, improve community safety and shape the future of STEM. Because the future belongs to those who are willing to reach for it.
