On behalf of the University, Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox expresses his sympathy following the passing of Dr Merce Cunningham, celebrated American dancer, teacher and choreographer and holder of an ECU honorary doctorate.

The University awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa to Dr Cunningham in 2001 for his distinguished contribution to dance.

Dr Cunningham has long been considered an arts icon of the twentieth century, setting up the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in 1953. He performed in every Company production until he reached age 70, in 1989.

Dr Cunningham is considered a visionary and one of the leaders of the artistic modernist movement.

His legacy lives on through the Cunningham Dance Foundation, which supports and promotes performing arts, young artists, educational outreach and the Merce Cunningham Archives.
