ECU welcomes international students

Thursday, 22 July 2010

ECU welcomed new international students on Thursday, 15 July as part of the international student orientation program.

Students attended a number of activities such as the Vital Information Session for International Students course, which provided non-domestic students with information on their rights and obligations whilst studying and living in Perth and a presentation from Native Arc, funded by Environmental Services, which gave information on animal safety and the ethical treatment of animals.

Students also got the chance to get up close and personal with native Australian wildlife, including a bobtail lizard, bandicoot, and a Stimson python.

Coordinator of Environmental Services, Belinda O’Brien gave a presentation on recycling at ECU and reducing the carbon footprint, while guest speakers from various organisations including Transperth; The Department of Immigration and Citizenship; OHSC Worldcare; Department of Commerce; the ECU Student Guild and the Western Australian Police provided students with information about studying in Perth and student life.

The orientation activities provided students with a great opportunity to chat to staff from the Student Services Centre, gain an insight into university life, ask questions and meet fellow international students.

Students also received free information packs with goodies donated by Corporate Express.

Manager of Student Retention and Support, Helen Frederiksen, believes the sessions are an important introduction for international students embarking on their studies at ECU.

“The seminars are both educational and informative and are essential for international students who wish to get a head start in their studies at ECU.”

“It’s a great opportunity for students to meet staff and fellow students, get a feel for university life and settle into their studies before semester starts.”

Orientation activities for both international and local students will continue until Saturday, 24 July.
