A change of mind or a busy life should not stop you from pursuing your goals.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) provides flexibility, choice and opportunities to enhance your career prospects.

Whether you're starting out fresh or making a career change, studying at ECU ensures you can develop the relevant knowledge and skills to achieve your goals when you're ready.

Change of pace

Hugh Barrington didn't start off in commerce straight off the bat. After travelling the world and working in musical theatre for approximately 10 years, the allure of constant travel and living out of a suitcase had lost its shine.

Opting for a change of pace, he settled down and after getting married he moved to Perth and enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce at ECU.

"Choosing ECU was a natural decision for me because several members of my family had studied there before," Mr Barrington said.

"I opted for a Bachelor of Commerce because of its versatility and wide range of options.

"My approach was to explore the core units, discover my interests, and make my choices from there. It was during this process that I discovered my aptitude for accounting."

Turning experience into a job

"My favourite thing about studying at ECU was the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program, which provided me with invaluable hands-on experience in my field of study," Mr Barrington said.

It was Mr Barrington's WIL program experience that led him straight into his current job as an accountant at KPMG.

"I converted my summer internship at KPMG into a WIL unit and the experience was eye-opening," he said.

"KPMG was enthusiastic about having me as an intern, and upon completing my internship, they offered me the opportunity to begin my graduate position immediately.

"The WIL program allows you to gain practical, real-world experience, which can be invaluable in launching your career."

The ECU experience

During his degree, Mr Barrington also built new connections and forged meaningful friendships with fellow students.

"I think ECU is a step above other universities in terms of their drive to get their graduates real world practical experience to make them more hireable," he said.

"The faculty and staff were also exceptional and were consistently supportive throughout my academic journey."

Student first approach

The University's focus on putting students first has been recognised by the 2023 Good Universities Guide, which has awarded ECU a five-star rating for teaching quality for 16 years in a row.

ECU provides a range of entry pathways, flexible study options including online and part-time, excellent student support, as well as skills development opportunities across a range of courses.

"If you're considering going to any of the universities over here in WA and you want to get a job at the end of it, ECU is for you," Mr Barrington said.
