ECU PhD candidate first Australian student awarded international horticultural accolade
Mahmood Ul Hasan has received the Outstanding Graduate in Horticulture awardfrom the American Society for Horticulture Science (ASHS).
The Edith Cowan University (ECU) PhD candidate is the first Australian student to receive the international award.
The esteemed recognition was awarded in acknowledgement of Mahmood's exceptional academic achievements, high quality thesis research, leadership skills, active involvement in departmental activities and dedicated service to the horticulture program.
ECU Professor Zora Singh said Mahmood was an outstanding student who thoroughly deserved the recognition.
"Mahmood is the first Australian student ever to receive this prestigious award, marking a significant milestone both for him and for Australian horticultural research on the global stage.
"Since he joined my horticulture research group in 2022, he has proved to be an intelligent, reliable and hard-working student who is eager to learn new techniques and understand industry-driven approaches.
"It is an honour for me as a supervisor to see my students succeed and win international awards."

Since he was awarded the ECU Higher Degree by Research PhD Scholarship in 2022, Mahmood has achieved many accolades, from award wins to being published as lead author in eight leading journals.
In his current PhD projectMahmood is endeavouring to regulate fruit ripening to expand the marketable window of persimmon fruit.
"It is a huge honour to receive this award, especially being the first PhD student from Australia to be recognised by the American Society for Horticulture Science," Mahmood said.
"I have been working closely with the horticulture industry in Western Australia on several different research and development projects and I look forward to this important work continuing."
