Alongside critical and creative thinking, skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are required for 75 percent of jobs in our emerging economy.
Edith Cowan University (ECU) offers a wide variety of industry informed courses like Biomedical Science, Health Science, Exercise and Sports Science, Speech Pathology, and more.
In addition to forward-thinking specialisations in the emerging areas of community paramedicine and workplace health and safety, ECU's STEM courses are backed up with practical industry experience that enable you to adapt to complex workplaces and enjoy the benefits of a fulfilling career in STEM.
Realising your potential for STEM
Inspired by her Nonno to love learning from a very young age, Tanika Cunniffe always had a passion for science with her earliest memory in year 7 when she worked on a 9-page paper on cell organelles.
"I've kept that paper to this day because it reminds me of the first time I truly loved a subject, it was a pinnacle point for me in discovering myself and my interests," said Tanika.
"Combining my love for science and forensics was a no brainer and I ended up choosing to study Biomedical Science with a Major in Forensics."
Hands on learning at ECU's super labs
At ECU's purpose-built Science building, Tanika is gaining extensive practical experience working in cutting edge laboratories.
"We were working in the super labs straight away, performing exciting and engaging experiments and practical work," she said.
"The extent of practical activities we do every day have added to my knowledge and competency. I feel I will be self-sufficient and confident to go into the workforce and trust my ability to apply what I have learnt in a workplace setting."
A supportive and fulfilling ECU experience
Bachelor of Speech Pathology student, Jacqueline Beaver was surprised at the familiarity of her classes at ECU.
"All of the students and lecturers get to know each other, providing an extra element of approachability and support," she said.
"The teaching staff are genuinely interested in helping students, and the degree is thoughtfully scaffolded, meaning each semester is more challenging than the last."
Practical industry experience
ECU STEM students can practically apply what they learn through various industry placements and Work Integrated Learning opportunities.
Jacqueline's work placements allowed her to further develop STEM competency and become comfortable and motivated for her future career.
"The practical experience has been incredibly positive and motivational for the more difficult times of the degree, with opportunities to network and create a support system within the industry," she said.
"I'm really proud to be a part of the ECU community. It's inclusive, supportive, and has allowed me to achieve so much already."
