The 16 Days in WA to Stop Violence Against Women project is Western Australia’s contribution to the efforts of the global 16 Days of Activism to eliminate gender-based violence.

ECU is proud to support 16 Days in WA, a campaign that unites and inspires communities across the State.

The campaign takes place each year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day.

To help raise awareness in 2022, a selection of prominent landmarks across Western Australia (WA) will be lit up in orange – the global campaign colour to promote an end to gender-based violence.

Some statistics

Violence against women is never okay. We all have a responsibility to break the cycle.

Here in WA:

  • 65 per cent of assaults recorded in WA last year were related to family and domestic violence
  • one in two women reported experiencing sexual harassment since the age of 15, and one in four men
  • Aboriginal women are 32 times more likely than non-Aboriginal women to be hospitalised from family violence
  • Sexual assaults jumped by 10 per cent in WA between 2019 and 2020.

At ECU, we know that anyone can experience family violence, domestic violence, sexual assault and sexual harassment. It can impact on every aspect of a person’s life, including their work and study.

We encourage our ECU community members to reach out and get support.

Support at ECU and beyond

There are a range of support services available for staff and students, both at ECU and within the wider community.
