Edith Cowan University (ECU) has reaffirmed its position as a national leader in teaching, with the Australian Financial Review (AFR) naming ECU the top university in Western Australia and placing second nationally for teaching quality in its annual Best Universities Ranking.

ECU's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Rowena Harper said the latest ranking speaks to the University's core values.

"ECU is incredibly proud to be recognised for the strength of our teaching, because at its heart this is about delivering the best possible experience for our students," Professor Harper said.

"Providing the very best in teaching is built on genuine connection, care and getting to know how our students learn best. This recognition reflects the passion, experience and dedication of our staff and the strong relationships they build every day to ensure our students feel supported and empowered to succeed in their careers."

The AFR rated ECU among the Top 15 Universities across Australia, with only two universities in Western Australia able to claim this distinction.

The 2025 AFR Rankings Framework

The AFR Best Universities Ranking is the first in Australia that recognises traditional notions of excellence, such as research and career impact, alongside important measures of student satisfaction and equity.

University performance is evaluated under four pillars: Teaching, Research, Career impact, and Equity.

Teaching uses the Quality Indicators in Learning and Teaching (QILT) Student Experience Questionnaire from the Social Research Centre sponsored by the Australian government for the student satisfaction sub-pillar.

For undergraduate, postgraduate coursework and research higher degree students, QILT collects answers under the headings: overall experience, teaching quality, skills development, support, learner engagement and learning resources. The international sub-pillar includes five ratings on Teaching from QS and THE rankings agencies. The two sub-pillars are equally weighted for the Teaching score.

"We are not surprised, but so proud of this outcome. Our teaching at ECU is all about opening doors, expanding opportunities and giving our students all the support they need to reach their goals at university and beyond," Professor Harper added.
