Life gets busy and all those responsibilities can put your dream career plans on hold, but with flexible study options and 5-star student support at ECU, you can achieve your career goals while balancing life and work responsibilities.

Change of plans

Dan Campbell is a bricklayer, father, dog owner and mature aged student at ECU. He always knew he wanted to go to university but didn't know what he wanted to do.

"I was raised by a single mother, we were very much dependent on welfare and there wasn't really a lot to aspire to in what I saw in my day-to-day life," he said.

"The plan was to make enough money to be able to support myself through uni once I figured out what to do, but at 19 I had a child and 16 years later, here we are."

Realising your potential

After years of working in construction, Dan realised he had the ability to translate difficult life concepts into simpler terms after helping a peer on a training course.

"What better use of this lived experience than to be a conduit to help working class men understand the psychological concepts that could better their lives?" he said.

Balancing act

Dan currently studies psychology online while balancing full-time work and family.

"Spare time is a rarity and the ability to work my studying schedule around all my other schedules is completely invaluable," he said.

"Studying online may seem daunting to some, as if you’re floating out at sea all alone, but I’ve managed to access great support from everyone at ECU."

It's never too late

"For any would be mature age students thinking about further education, or those who 'the lack of academic achievement’ has become a bit of a bugbear like myself – don't be afraid to take it on," Dan said.

"Personal development continues well beyond your twenties and if you don't at least give it a shot, you'll never know what you could have achieved."

Flexibility to achieve what you want

ECU provides flexible study options including online and part-time, which means you can choose how you study, to suit your life and work commitments.

The University's focus on putting students first has been recognised by the 2023 Good Universities Guide, which awarded ECU a five-star rating for teaching quality for 16 years in a row.
