Examining Australia’s unhealthy relationship with alcohol

Wednesday, 29 July 2020

While alcohol contributes more to mortality and morbidity in Australia than all the use of illegal drugs combined, there is a disproportionate focus by the media on the harms of illegal drugs.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) addiction expert Dr Stephen Bright will host a live Q and A webinar in association with the ABC’s new documentary On the Sauce, hosted by Shaun Micallef, which critically examines the relationship alcohol has in Australian society.

Key experts and the general public will discuss Australia’s unhealthy relationship with alcohol and particularly how media reporting often plays down the poor health outcomes associated with alcohol while sensationalising the same information on illegal drugs.

The webinar will involve a panel discussion with the opportunity for viewers to ask questions. The panel will also include:

  • ECU public health expert Dr Julie Dare;
  • ABC journalist Flip Prior;
  • RMIT drug policy and digital media expert Dr Monica Barratt;
  • Curtin University journalism and media expert Dr Kayt Davis.

The webinar is a partnership between the ABC and Alcohol and Other Drugs Media Watch, an organisation founded by Dr Bright that aims to assist journalists to report on alcohol and other drug issues using science and evidence rather than perpetuating myths, opinions and moral panic.

The webinar can be viewed live on YouTube from 6pm WST, 5 August 2020. It will also be available to watch via the same link after the event.
