Bachelor of Arts (Arts and Cultural Management)

The Bachelor of Arts (Arts and Cultural Management) prepares students to creatively produce, manage and lead arts and cultural projects and events. Students are prepared to enter organisational contexts such as performing arts companies, arts venues, galleries, festivals, cultural institutions and creative industries including screen media. Students develop professional knowledge and skills in arts and cultural leadership, marketing, nance and legal compliance, and at every stage of the course apply what they learn to industry practicums. The course has a strong focus on developing transferable skills whilst also fostering ethical, collaborative, and innovative dispositions to help graduates advocate for the value of arts and culture in a rapidly changing world.

Practicum Requirement

All students must complete the WIL units ADM1620 Introduction to Creative and Cultural Ecoystems, ADM1623 Introduction to Creative Producing, ADM2611 Arts Organisations Management, ADM2616 Resourcing Arts Projects, Organisations and Events, ADM2614 Arts and Festivals Marketing, ADM3601 Applied Arts Law, ADM2612 Venue Operations and ADM3606 Arts Studio Project.

Duty of care

A WWCC may be required for certain workplaces. A placement host may have vaccination and other requirements. You may not be able to complete placement units if you are unable to meet the placement requirements, which may impact your ability to complete this course.

Attendance requirements

Attendance requirements with host organisations are negotiated between the unit coordinator, host and student. Once agreed, the student must adhere to the conditions of the practicum.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply broad knowledge of the theories, principles and concepts of arts and cultural management to a range of theoretical and practical discipline situations.
  2. Think critically to review and analyse complex arts and cultural management situations and problems, synthesising and applying relevant knowledge to achieve best outcomes.
  3. Demonstrate and cultivate initiative, judgement and creativity in planning, problem solving, and decision making through project, organisational and strategic planning for arts and cultural organisations.
  4. Demonstrate arts and cultural leadership within diverse contexts and with diverse audiences, stakeholders, and communities.
  5. Demonstrate and cultivate cultural respect when communicating and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  6. Work collaboratively and demonstrate initiative to implement social, sustainable and ethical values through appropriate disciplinary methods.
  7. Exercise self-reflection, autonomy, and responsibility for own learning and an ability to effectively lead in an arts and cultural management career.
  8. Engage in critical discourse and appreciation of arts and culture, showing an understanding of artistic process, aesthetics, and purpose.

Admission requirements

Admission requirement (Band 3)

All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course. The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • AQF Cert IV;
  • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
  • Undergraduate Certificate;
  • Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course; or
  • Experience Based Entry Scheme.

English Language requirement (Band 3)

English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

  • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
  • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0);
  • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;
  • University Preparation Course;
  • Indigenous University Orientation Course;
  • AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree;
  • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent); or
  • Other tests, courses or programs as defined in the Admissions Policy.

Course Specific Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to attend an interview. It is important that prospective students have an existing interest and background in the arts and creative industries, and a commitment to extending their knowledge in arts and cultural management.

Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) level

This course has been accredited by ECU as an AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree Award.

Non standard timetable requirements

Students may be required to attend/support evening and weekend performances, rehearsals and/or practicums. These may be at locations external to ECU.

Course Structure

This is a Programmatic Learning course. This Course uses a mix of Learning Units and Assessment Units which all connect together.

  • Learning Units are where students develop their knowledge, skills, and capabilities through regular activities and feedback.
  • Assessment Units are where students integrate, apply and demonstrate that learning.

Students will collect evidence of learning in a digital portfolio that charts their course journey, and can be used as a showcase to employers.
