Overview

All ECU campuses are proudly smoke-free, providing a healthier clean air environment for staff, students and visitors. The smoke-free initiative includes vaping and applies to all University campuses and facilities including carparks, ovals and all University leased premises, and is supported by ECU By-laws and smoke free guideline.

About

ECU has been a smoke free university in 2012, following consultation with stakeholders, policy development and a University-wide health promotion campaign.

By supporting ECU Smoke-Free initiative we hope to play our part in reducing preventable illness and death caused by smoking.

Smoking or vaping is prohibited in:

  • all ECU owned and controlled buildings and enclosed workplaces
  • on all University grounds and outdoor areas
  • in all ECU vehicles or any vehicle being used for university business

FAQs

Why is the University smoke-free?

To promote a healthy environment for staff, students and the wider community who share and visit our campuses.

ECU also has a legal responsibility to provide a safe workplace and to protect staff, students and visitors from the serious health risks associated with exposure to second hand smoke.

Where does the smoke-free initiative apply?

The smoke-free initiative applies to ALL University campuses, ECU City, Joondalup, South West, satellite locations and facilities including carparks and ovals and all University leased premises.

Who does this apply to?

Everyone: staff, students, contractors and visitors.

What products are included in the ban?

Smoking cigarettes, vapes, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes or the use of any product that emits harmful or toxic substances.

What happens if I continue to smoke on campus?

You may be politely reminded that ECU is smoke‑free and asked to stop or move off-campus. Continued non‑compliance may result in action under University by‑laws.

Who enforces the smokefree requirement?

Everyone. It is your right and responsibility to maintain a healthy and safe workplace; if you see people smoking anywhere on ECU grounds you are within your rights to respectfully ask them to move off the campus or put the cigarette out. If the person does not comply or you need support, you can contact Campus Security (24/7) on 6304 3333 for assistance.

Where can I smoke on-campus?

Nowhere. The By Laws indicate that smoking is not permitted on any University grounds.
