The Western Australian Fibre and Textiles Association (WAFTA) is excited to present twentyONE+, an exhibition of artists working in the field of contemporary Australian textiles. This exhibition runs from Saturday, 18 June to Thursday, 7 July 2016 at Spectrum Project Space and explores and celebrates the emotionally evocative, tactile, sculptural and sensory qualities of fibre and textiles. Conceived as a way to celebrate the WAFTA’s twenty-first birthday, this national juried exhibition presents twenty-two artworks which explore the material, aesthetic and conceptual qualities of fibres and textiles in diverse ways.

Between them, the artists employ a vast array of traditional, contemporary and experimental techniques which illustrate the growing interest and appreciation of textile and fibre art within the broader artistic community. The stories behind the artworks reflect this. A sculptural work, ‘Contemplation Cubby’ from selected artist Trudi Pollard demonstrates how she shields herself from change by surrounding and arming herself with items that ground her. For selected artists Annie Shelley and Alana McVeigh their work ‘Threads of Porcelain’ - a collaboration/collision of textiles and ceramics - links traditional makers with contemporary interdisciplinary artists.

twentyONE+ is a reaffirmation of WAFTA’s ability to foster growth amongst all its members. This inclusive membership group reflects the significance and diversity of Australian textile-based art practice and represents the genesis of what is anticipated to be a National biennial event.

An on-line catalogue can be accessed via the twentyONE+ website.
