Year 12 students have pushed themselves to the limits of their endurance – all in the name of putting classroom theory into practice.
Staff from ECU's Human Performance Centre guided the Mater Dei College students through a laboratory-based Maximal Oxygen Uptake test on a treadmill and a field based Maximal Aerobic Speed test.
Students played the role of subjects and also completed data collection and analysis.
They completed tasks including monitoring and recording their subject’s heart rate and rating of perceived exertion, ventilation rate and respiratory exchange ratio while running on a treadmill.
"By being able to witness and take part in a practical experiment, it gave us the understanding of what happens in our bodies. It was easier to grasp and understand when we were a part of it," visiting student Montana Colreavy said.
Human Performance Centre Coordinator Mr Zane McDonald said the workshops were focussed specifically on the learning outcomes of the Upper School Physical Education Studies course.
“The program aimed to give students practical examples of theory they had studied in the classroom,” Mr McDonald said.
“Our goal is to enable students to gain hands-on experience in the labs which will in turn help them make meaningful connections with the theoretical aspects.”
