Support for the blind

ECU researchers have partnered with Senses Foundation, the Western Australian organisation for the WA Deafblind Association. The aim is to further develop and test a system to enable the deafblind who cannot read standard text, yet have some remaining vision, to be able to read via the use of sequences of patterns. Such patterns are matched to a deafblind person’s remaining visual capacity. Each pattern can represent a character. Instead of seeing standard text on screen a deafblind person will see sequences of coloured patterns representing the words and sentences. This system runs on a standard PC.

In summary, the project involves:

  • the development of GUIs for use by the partially sighted; and
  • the development of fonts for the deafblind who have some remaining vision.
