Associate Professor shares expertise on respect in the workplace

At an International Women’s Day event, hosted by the Law Society of Western Australia and Women Lawyers of Western Australia on Thursday 8 March, Associate Professor Maryam Omari addressed audiences on the topic of ‘Respect in the Profession’.  

Associate Professor Omari joined a panel of speakers including the Honourable Justice Janine Pritchard, of the Supreme Court of WA, and Dr Christopher Kendall, of the Law Society of WA, in discussing the issues surrounding disrespect and bullying in the workplace.

With extensive experience and knowledge of human resource management, Associate Professor Omari provided clarity on these issues, including why people engage in disrespectful or bullying behaviours, how men and women bully differently, and the importance of context to determine the difference between disrespect and justifiable comments or jokes.

She also outlined the consequences of disrespect, and how, as a victim or witness of disrespect, to respond appropriately. Furthermore, she discussed strategies for building a more considerate profession.

“The legal profession has traditionally been one that demands respect from the community, so I was pleased to share my knowledge on how that respect can be further developed between colleagues within the profession. It is important for both men and women to be aware of how disrespect can manifest in the workplace, as this awareness is the key to its prevention,” she said.
