Almost 1,000 people were inspired to become more committed to sustainability at the second Enactus ECU Sustainability Festival at Hillarys Boardwalk.

Held on 15 October, the Festival was organised by Enactus ECU, a group of students from across the University committed to action on the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  These include climate action, eliminating poverty and building sustainable cities and communities.

Enactus is an international organisation with members from 33 countries. Each year Enactus student teams pursue projects and showcase these in a national competition. The winning team from each country then attends an international event where the project with the greatest impact is announced.

At the 2022 Enactus Australia National showcase, the ECU team was excited to be awarded ‘The Race for Climate Action’ award, which included a $1,000 prize to be used for the Festival.

Enactus ECU President, Hasit Gadani, was inspired by the number of people who attended the 2022 Festival and engaged with the activities. The stalls covered topics ranging from permaculture, clothing swaps and recycling, advocacy for asylum seekers and refugees to protecting forests and reefs and waste reduction and recycling.

After completing a tour of the stalls visitors voted for their favourite.

The Protect Ningaloo display, which educated people on the importance of our natural reefs and the many animals that inhabit them, came out on top. They were followed by FISH: Foundation for Indigenous Sustainable Health, an organisation that provides opportunities for First Nations people to share their wisdom and insights, and teach people how to connect and care for each other and for country.

Coming in third was Millennium Kids, an environmental youth organisation that empowers young people to become leaders and change-agents in their communities.

Hasit expressed enormous gratitude to the 40 Enactus ECU members and student volunteers, ECU staff, Faculty Adviser Nickey Ludkins and the stallholders who all contributed incredibly to the success of the event.

The Festival was sponsored by the City of Joondalup, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Hillarys Boardwalk and the ECU Student Guild, and supported by ECU’s School of Business and Law.
