The Balanchine winter workshops

This project investigates the learning of a new classical ballet technique, in this instance, that of Georges Balanchine, who developed his technique in line with choreographic explorations when he, as a young choreographer of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, moved to the US to foster a uniquely American style. Together with the residency of Eve Lawson, a certified rehearsal director of the Balanchine Trust, researchers will investigate two pivotal questions: what are the difficulties encountered in learning and absorbing to professional standard a new classical ballet technique; and what shifts occur mentally, emotionally and functionally when students transition from a tertiary learning schedule into a simulated professional company environment?
