Yasir Al-Abdeli is the Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, a member of the School of Engineering Executive and leader/founder of the Thermofluids Research Group.
In his Academic Leadership role as Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, Yasir is responsible for driving teaching and learning activities as well as developing and implementing teaching and learning strategies with a focus on continuous improvement. This is done considering factors such as creativity, innovation, sound risk management, the student experience and forward thinking. More broadly, the ADTL’s portfolio includes overseeing external (Professional) accreditation of engineering programs through Engineers Australia, internal accreditation of courses (University policy and AQF) as well as leading initiatives to further develop, enhance and support learning and teaching activities in the School which is home to an array of disciplines including engineering and aviation.
This role has a strong focus on enhancing ECU’s national and international profile, particularly in the area of teaching and learning, curriculum design and the overall student experience.
With the above in mind, Associate Professor Yasir Al-Abdeli brings into the ADTL role:
- A scholarly record in mechanical engineering (thermofluids and energy) as well as engineering education (flipped classes, problem-based and experiential learning)
- Leadership in overseeing the academic aspects of external (professional) and internal (university) accreditation of programs, working parties, new initiatives, leadership of the Thermofluids Research Group as well as co-coordination of the Blended Learning Community
- Capacity to adopt and operationalise academic governance requirements in learning and teaching programs
- Experience in leading change in learning and teaching
- Mentoring across both L&T as well as research
