The Sustainable Energy and Resources Laboratory features state-of-the-art equipment and unique capabilities unrivalled in Australia, creating promising possibilities for the future of energy.

The cutting-edge facilities enable next-generation research in carbon capture and underground hydrogen storage to deliver real-world solutions to the complex challenges facing the upstream oil and gas industries.

With some of the most advanced equipment and specialist expertise in Australia, new discoveries and industry applications can be realised to drive sustainable energy production, decarbonisation and contribute to climate change mitigation.

Carbon capture and hydrogen recovery represent a key technology in sustainable energy production to unlock a greener future.

ECU researchers are leading experimental and applied research to improve understanding of the key issues impacting the hydrogen, coal, oil and gas industries to drive real-world engineering solutions.

In addition to world-class research and development, partnerships offer industry-led integrated learning, while putting business at the forefront of a career-ready innovation and engineering workforce.

World-class equipment and facilities

The Lab houses advanced equipment and instruments to uncover new discoveries with industry applications. These include:

  • Medical CT coreflood system for 3D imaging of rock samples
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance coreflooding system (hydrogen grade)
  • Steam methane reforming system for hydrogen generation
  • HPHT contact angle system (hydrogen grade)
  • Proppant conductivity evaluation system
  • Gas adsorption isotherm system (Pct-pro)
  • Rock evaluation analyser (TOC)
  • Streaming potential coreflood system
  • Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy + SARA
